Ever hear of flow state? For a long time, I hadn’t! When I started my journey as an entrepreneur, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and it is honestly a miracle that I have made it this far! That being said, I think one of the biggest things that has impacted me in the best way has been personal development. I am hoping that my sharing what I learn throughout my journey will help you get where you want to be faster – especially if you’re still in a place where I was, where I thought only people who had issues read self-help books! 😂 Anyway, one of my favorite things to be in is the “flow state,” so I thought I’d tell you a bit about it, and most importantly, how you can get into the flow state!
As an entrepreneur, one of the things with which I struggle is the battle between taking advantage of my freedom and choosing to not have a schedule on days where I don’t have shoots, or following the advice of many experts and making a schedule for myself to ensure productivity.
While I can see the benefits of each (working from a certain time to a certain time each day could feel too much like a JOB, but setting specific time to do specific things could ensure productivity AND allow you to finish your day early and do things you TRULY enjoy, as opposed to lazily getting through what you need to do during a longer period of time and not having the time to really enjoy a longer indulgent activity), I think I have finally, after almost 7 years, found a happy medium.
Here’s a video I did live on Facebook (do you follow me? If so, you should! Blatant self-promotion here, but you’re at my website – what do you expect?) that tells a little about what has been working for me lately!
What I plan to do is schedule “work hours,” and then stick to them as best as I can (as long as a shoot doesn’t pop up and change my plans), and keep a list of the things I need to accomplish, prioritized (as I mentioned here). Then, during those hours, I will follow my cravings as best I can. I will drive the Porsche when I have the keys. I will allow myself to do what calls me, so that I can get into that flow state.
I recently hired a VA again (FINALLY), so part of what I am going to do is delegate the things that I NEVER crave doing to her. That will help a lot with the “Oh man, I know this NEEDS to be done, but I’d much rather ____.”
To further explain, I should share my sources. One of them is Olivia Charlet, and what she said during our interview – to follow your cravings. Seriously, since I interviewed her and joined her membership tribe, I have NEVER felt so on track with my goals and productive with my time in my whole life. I should also add that I don’t think I have spent as much time doing things I enjoy like taking bubble baths, reading for fun, and spending time with Tommy while NOT working, so it is BALANCED productivity, not the stressed kind!
The other source is the You Made It Weird podcast, specifically this episode. Ironically, it was the episode that came out the day that I did Pete Holmes’ (the host’s) makeup!
So basically – set a working schedule for yourself (whether you’re an entrepreneur and that means all day, or whether you have household duties to complete after work, or a side hustle – whatever). How many hours each day or week do you want to get sh!t done, and when do you want those hours to be? Then make your prioritized to-do list. Then, when those hours arrive – follow your cravings, drive the Porsche when you have the keys, and get yourself into flow! I am sure you will find like I did that you are enjoying life so much more!
What will you do in your productive hours? When will they be? Comment below!
