This probably isn’t a surprise coming from someone who doesn’t really know how to relax (see this post), but I am not a natural when it comes to playing.
In the specific niche of fitness and nutrition where I spend the most time, I have heard of or befriended a couple of experts at playing – Kellen Milad, Angelo De La Cruz, and Darryl Edwards. They advocate doing fun things outside for fitness, or incorporating movement fluidly throughout your lifestyle. I love the idea of that, but it’s just not honestly ME.
I never really played sports as a youngster, unless you count highschool cheerleading, which has been a debate among many. When I was a kid, I would much rather spend my time reading than…. well, just about anything else. For those reasons, I LOVE keeping my workouts in a box. I am not against being active – I love hiking, walking, and things like Stand Up Paddleboarding. But if you ask me to play, or to play a sport with you, I will honestly get really uncomfortable, even though I am pretty coordinated!
It all boils down to an issue I am trying to overcome, and that is largely not allowing myself to do anything in a way that is less than perfect. Healthy, right? Haha. Anyway, I usually don’t want to play if I am not going to be awesome at whatever it is being played, and since sports are not usually part of that, I’d rather watch!
The other day, Tommy and I were visiting his family at his parents’ house, and it was absolutely beautiful out. He asked me if I would play frisbee with him, and my natural reaction was to decline, but I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and had a BLAST! I am so glad that I did it! We had fun in the sun, and burned some calories in the process.

I recommend you try to do the same, and soon!

So how about you? Are you naturally interested in playing? Sports? When was the last time you played, and what did you play? When was the last time you said “peace out” to your comfort zone?
xoxo,
Mandie
