This is long overdue, but I feel like I am FINALLY catching my stride in what we’re calling “uncertain times!” I would not be mad, though, if it ended up with a facepalm “Of course, once I get into a routine again, quarantine is over!” If you’re new to the blog (or me in general) you may not know that I am a Beachbody coach. I don’t actively promote it anymore, but Beachbody (despite being an MLM, which I have varying opinions on) has definitely changed my life, and in fact, continues to! Anyway, the reason I mention that is that it’s evidence of a long love for fitness, which is why I feel like me sharing fun ways to stay fit during quarantine is past due. Better late than never, though, especially with things that can help you be better and healthier! And even if things are back to the “new normal” tomorrow, these are all still great things to do, even if there aren’t stay-at-home orders in place!
It is probably obvious that a (former?) Beachbody coach would have a big library of at-home workouts, as well as equipment for it. I’m so grateful for that, especially when I saw that the Selectech weights that I got for $250ish are now selling for $1500! I’m currently mainly following ChaLEAN Extreme, but supplementing PiYo*, TurboFire, and P90X3 workouts whenever the schedule calls for a rest day, cardio, or stretching/yoga workout!
Beachbody has plenty of newer programs than those, but I guess similarly to how many people prefer music that was popular when they were in High School or College to current music, I guess I prefer workouts from my Beachbody HeyDey! If you’re not blessed with a full library of workout programs (from any era), they have of course evolved and have streaming content, and have free trials, which you can find here!
One thing that has made working out from home interesting is our pup, as you can see:
He cracks me up! And yes, he pretty much always seems to think he needs to share the mat with us!
On the other hand, one way that he has been wonderful and helpful is that he has gotten us outside of the house quite a bit (with masks on and staying away from strangers, of course)!
That brings me to my next two stay fit during quarantine suggestions, which go hand-in-hand and are perfect if you don’t have the workout arsenal that I have at my disposal!
Walking/Running!
I know that doesn’t seem like two suggestions, but here’s why I broke it into two…
I have joined two things that will hold me accountable to some movement (walking and running).
The first is a StepBet. Until yesterday, I had never heard of it! I’ve done “DietBet” in the past, as well as this healthier alternative to it, but this idea has to be my favorite. I didn’t like DietBet because it is focused on weight, which I don’t feel is an accurate way to measure health. StepBet is different, because it is based on how many steps you take!
If you already have some sort of activity tracker, this could be perfect. If not, FitBits have gotten pretty reasonably-priced (this is the one Tommy has and loves), and there are likely many used varieties available on sites like eBay and Poshmark!
The app uses your activity so far to set goals, and you have to reach a standard goal four days a week, a more challenging stretch goal two days a week, and then one day as a gimme.
The game I’m in is $40, and if you meet your goals, you get your money back at the very least… If you do reach your goals, and others don’t, the winners split that pot! Click here to check out the one I am in, or message me for more details!
The second walking/running-related stay fit during quarantine idea is that I’ve signed up for my first virtual 5K! It isn’t required to be a run, but when I signed up, I thought it was, and so I am going to do my best to run or jog as much as I can!
I giggled a bit to myself when I typed “jog,” because for years, I’ve been saying “jog – pronounced ‘yog,’ with a soft j…” because of Anchorman… Well, that’s how I got sucked into this virtual 5K… I had to get the swag that goes with!
Oh, I am such a sucker for all things silly, which is why it is probably not surprising that some friends of mine and I that are going to do it in mustaches… Which is extra ridiculous for someone like me, who is doing it outside and will be wearing a mask to protect my community members in case I am carrying the virus and asymptomatic!
I think either or both of these ideas are great, because I know myself, and I am better at staying accountable to others than I am to me… And having “skin in the game” with the StepBet will motivate me!
If you aren’t confident that you can safely reach minimum step goals in the current situation, and don’t have at-home videos and equipment, I would love to remind you of my past podcast guest Charlene DiPaola whose business (Hipshake Fitness) is perfect for these times, as it is an online fitness community!
She provided a code for a free trial in the episode, so check that out if you’d like it! Otherwise, their instagram is constantly and generously sharing free trial codes and challenges, so if the code doesn’t work for some reason, I’d look there!
My last suggestion on how to stay fit during quarantine is for those who liked the commitment to an appointment for a real class. An insta-homie (who I haven’t met in person, but want to next time I’m in NYC) is a fitness instructor who’s been teaching donation-based classes on Zoom. Check her out here!
She posts class schedules to her feed weekly and story daily, and you can message her for the link to join in! Let me know if you do it – I may just join in too, as I have been meaning to!
Well, that wraps it up so far for me in this regard… But stay tuned for more soon! I’d love to hear what you’re doing to stay fit during quarantine, so please leave any suggestions or resources in the comments! I’d also love to hear if you try any of my suggestions, so let me know that, too (there are so many ways to get in touch with me, haha – see below and pick your fave)!
Stay healthy!
Cheers,
Mandie

*The beachbody and amazon links are affiliate links. This means that I get a small percentage of the $ you spend, but don’t worry – you are spending the same amount as if you use a different link, you just don’t get the satisfaction of knowing you helped me out a bit!
